...Bangladesh - 200 Taka Father of the Nation Mujibur Rahman Birth Centenary Commemorative Reprints 2022 And 2023

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ
(Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh)

Bangladesh Bank
Currency : Taka (BDT)

In 2020, the Bangladesh Bank released two commemorative notes of 100 and 200 taka, honoring the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman, who is also known as the Father of the Nation.

Here, I have posted the 200 taka reprints with the year dates of 2022 and 2023. Whilst the initial release consists of two notes (100 and 200 taka), only the 200 taka have been reprinted twice. So far, no reprint for the 100 taka has been sighted.

Following the 2024 July Revolution in Bangladesh where the elected government of Sheikh Hasina was deposed by a civil unrest, it was announced that new designs of banknotes will be released this year. The report also stated that the design for the new series will not be printed with the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman, like those issued in the past. It should be noted that Sheikh Hasina is the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman. In all, she won 5 general elections, and the last term she won was the January 2024 general election. However, she was forced to resign on 05.08.2024 due to the public unrest against the country's jobs quota system of Bangladesh Civil Service where a certain percentage of the government jobs are reserved for the descendants of freedom fighters from the Bangladesh Liberation War that led to the country's independence from Pakistan in 1971. The quota system was initially abolished in 2020 but was reintroduced in 2024 following a High court ruling.

Given the recent decision of the central bank, it is not sure if any of these 200 taka notes have been printed with the year date of 2024. In my opinion, it is unlikely and if this is correct, this will be the last of the 200 taka series printed with the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman.

Below are the two reprints of the 200 taka commemorative notes. The designs are still the same except for the year date and the Governor's signature for the 2023 print.

This is another Father and Daughter theme commemorative banknote.

This is a commemorative note of 50 taka issued on 20.10.2023. This note is issued to celebrate the inauguration of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel (বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান টানেল), aka Bangabandhu Tunnel. The tunnel is situated in the southern port city of Chittagong, and is an underwater expressway tunnel built under the Karnaphuli river. This is a toll paying tunnel and it is just over 9+ kilometers in length. This was a joint venture between the Bangladesh and Chinese governments and it cost about US$1.1B to construct. This tunnel, no doubt will improve the traffic flows between the capital city Dhaka and the southern city of Chittagong.

With this tunnel now in operation, the authority is expecting 17,000+ vehicles will use this tunnel daily, and the theme for this tunnel is Connectivity Creates Opportunities.

This is a commemorative note of 50 taka, released on 28.12.2022, celebrating the opening of the country's first High Speed rail metro in the capital city of Dhaka. This High Speed rail metro system was inaugurated on 28.12.2022 by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and this transportation system is to improve and ease the traffic congestion in the capital city of Dhaka. Dhaka has a population in excess of 23 millions. Obviously, it is a very crowded city and such systems would definitely improve traveling times for the city commuters.

The commemorative note is issued at face value, however, it also comes with a folder in both English or Bangla/Bengali, and sold at 100 taka per set.

As this is a commemorative note, the design of the note includes the image of the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. This is the second banknote issued with her image on it. Sheikh Hasina Wazed was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, and again since 2009. Sheikh Hasina Wazed is also the eldest daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (b.1920-1972), who was the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh until he was assassinated in office in 1972.

The title of this post says for itself. This note was released on 19.12.2022 to celebrate the country's Golden Jubilee of the Constitution and the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's independence day is celebrated on 26th of March. On 26.03.1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the Independence of Bangladesh (then known as East Pakistan), which led to West Pakistan launching an assault on East Pakistan, thus the beginning of the War of Independence. The civil war then went on for nine months, and ended on 16.12.1971. The end of the war is also celebrated as Victory day in Bangladesh.

Exactly one year after the end of the War of Independence, the Constitution of Bangladesh was established on 16.12.1972, whilst the Supreme Court of Bangladesh was established earlier on 09.01.1972. This is the highest court of laws in the country.

...Bangladesh - 100 Taka 2022 Commemorative Note Opening Ceremony of the Padma Bridge 25.06.2022

 গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ
(Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh)

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক
(Bangladesh Bank)
Currency : Taka (BDT)

On 25.06.2022, the Bangladesh Bank released a commemorative banknote of 100 taka to celebrate the opening ceremony of the Padma Bridge. A total of 10 million pieces were issued for this celebration. In addition to the single notes, they are also sold in an envelope for 150 taka per note, and 200 taka sold with a folder in an envelope. I believe there is no difference with those individual notes, and for those come in an envelope or folder.

This note was issued to celebrate the pride of the nation for building this Padma Bridge. The bridge is a Truss bridge, and was designed by AECOM, an American engineering firm, and was constructed by China Major Bridge Engineering Co Ltd. Construction for the bridge started on 26.11.2014, and completed on 09.11.2021, at an estimated cost of US$3.6 billion. The bridge is 6,150 meters in length, 18.18 meters wide, 120 meters tall and supported by 41 spans across. With this bridge, it was claimed that it would increase the country's GDP by as much as 1.2% p.a.

Obviously, this bridge is important to the country as it connects the population from one part of the country to another. Prior to the construction of this bridge, crossing the Padma River would have to be done by ferry or Lalon Shah Bridge (road bridge) or the Hardinge Bridge (rail bridge). Bangladesh is basically divided into three main parts by the Padam and Brahmaputra Rivers. These two rivers then joined up and formed the Meghna River that flows into the Bay of Bengal. The locals called this a dream bridge as they can now cross the river in less than 10 minutes compared to ferry crossing that can take a few hours one way, and even longer during monsoon seasons.

As this is a commemorative note, and on the front all text are printed in Bengali, and on the back it printed with the following text in English: -

The Padma Bridge is only one of the three bridges that are built across the Padma River in Bangladesh. It is also the longest bridge ever built in the country, and is also the longest over the Ganges River in terms of both spanning and the total length. This bridge connects the capital city Dhaka which is located in the northeast part of the country, to the southwest part of Bangladesh. The note is dated 2022 on the back.

..Bangladesh - 50 Taka x 2 Golden Jubilee Of Independence 1971-2021

 গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ

(Bangladesh Bank)
Currency : Taka (BDT)

Here are the two commemorative banknotes of 50 taka both released on 26.03.2021, celebrating the country's 50 years of independence (Golden Jubilee) from Pakistan. Bangladesh was once part of Pakistan and was also sometime referred to as 'East Pakistan' until it successfully obtained independence from Pakistan after a bitter civil war (Bangladesh Liberation War), which started on 25.03.1971. The war went on until the army of Pakistan surrendered on 16.12.1971.

Pakistan was granted independent by the British on 14.08.1947. Prior to this, Pakistan was part of India and was then divided into India and Pakistan before gaining independence. India achieved its independent on 15.08.1947. The existence of Pakistan came as a result of the Pakistan Movement where the minority Indian Muslims wanted an independent Muslim state and as such India was partitioned into two separate states by the British, with one part of Pakistan situated next to West Bengal on the eastern side of India, sharing a common border with India and Myanmar, and the other part situated on the western part of India, with Iran and Afghanistan as their neighbours on the left.

Despite gaining independence since 1947, Pakistan held its first general election on 07.12.1970 with mainly two main contesting parties, the Awami League based in East Pakistan and led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) based in West Pakistan and led by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The Awami League won 160 seats out of a total of 300 seats, thus giving them a majority in federal parliament. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's party won only 81 seats. All the seats won by the Awami League were all in East Pakistan. Since 1958, Pakistan was under martial law and headed by a military junta with General Yahya Khan as President. Following the 1970 election, General Yahya Khan refused to appoint Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the new Prime Minister as both Yahya Khan and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto do not want a political party from East Pakistan to run the country. This led to civil disobedience erupted across East Pakistan. On 25.03.1971, the Pakistani military junta sent in the army to suppress the civil disobedience and later arrested, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was then taken to West Pakistan as a prisoner. However, prior to his arrest, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh at midnight on 26.03.1971.

Since the starting of the civil war, India under the Government of the late Indira Gandhi supported the separation movement and began assisting the East Pakistani in achieving their goal. Obviously, the government in West Pakistan was aware of this and public opinion grew calling for Pakistan to 'crush India'. On 03.12.1971, the Pakistani Air Force launched a surprise attack on India, code name 'Operation Chengiz Khan'. India responded with air strikes which let to the start of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The war only lasted for 13 days and ended on 16.12.1971 when the Pakistani forces surrendered following the fall of Dacca (Dhaka) to the Indian army.

Following the end of the war, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not immediately released until 08.01.1972. By August 1972, more than 86 countries around the world accepted Bangladesh as an independent nation and Pakistan did not recognise Bangladesh as an independent nation until 1974 after pressure from most of the Muslim countries.

As for President Yahya Khan, he stepped and handed the control of the country (West Pakistan) to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and he also resigned from the command of the military on 20.12.1971. In Pakistan, Yahya Khan is considered the person who caused the break up of Pakistan unity. He died in 1980, aged 63.

For this special occasion, the central bank released two 50 taka banknotes, with one in a folder.

Individual Note -
The front on both notes depicts the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He is also known as the Father of the Nation in Bangladesh. Both notes on the front are also printed with the commemorative logo and the National Martyrs' Memorial in the center. The National Martyrs' Memorial is a monument built in 1982, in memory of those who died in the civil war of 1971. Construction for the monument was started in 1978.

On the back of the first note, the design is the same at the current 50 taka note first issued in 2011. The design is showing two men ploughing the field with two buffaloes. This came from a painting by a famous Bengali artist called Zainul Abedin (b.1914-1976). I believe the title for this painting is 'Life in Pakistan' and was painted in the 1950s.

For the second note, the design on the back is completely new. The design feaaturing eight young men (freedom fighters) advancing through the field with rifles in their hands during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. For this note it is also printed with the following text - 'Golden Jubilee Independence 1971-2021' on top, and also the words 'Commemorative Note' on the right.

I have been told the issue price for the folder note was 100 taka each. However, I do not have the folder issue myself.

Both notes are dated 2021.

Footnote
Like any wars happened in the past, there are no winners but only losers. During the Bangladesh War of Independence, the Pakistani military and other pro government groups committed horrendous crimes against the people of Bangladesh. Up to 3 millions people were killed and another 10 millions people fled to neighbouring India. Many crimes were also committed against women and children, the Hindus and other races too. The genocide against the people started immediately when the Pakistani military junta sent in the army to suppress the civil disobedience. Until today, I am not sure if anyone has been put trail for their crimes committed.

...ngladesh - 100 and 200 Taka Commemorative Centenary of the Birth of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman 1920-2020

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ
(Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh)

Bangladesh Bank
Currency : Taka (BDT)

In honoring the Father of the Nation, the central bank, Bangladesh Bank, issued two notes of 100 and 200 taka to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman (a.k.a Sheik Mujib). Sheik Mujib was born on 17/03/1920 in Tungipara, Bangal (British India, now Bangladesh). In 1971, following the end of the civil war with (West) Pakistan, he became the President/Prime Minister of the newly formed nation, Bangladesh. On 15/08/1975, he and almost his entire family, including his personal staff were brutally assassinated by a group of junior army officers in the presidential residence. The plotters did not even spare Sheik Mujib's youngest son, Sheikh Russel who was only aged 10 at the time of his murder. Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad was allegedly named as the ring leader for the coup. The group comprises at least 13 plotters/officers who took part in the assassination. Two of Sheik Mujib, daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana escaped the assassination as they were both overseas at that time visiting Europe (West Germany and Belgium respectively). Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh between 1996 to 2001 and also since 2009.

These two notes were reportedly issued on 17/03/2020, which is also the 100th birthday of Sheik Mujib. On the front of the notes both printed with the text - 'Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Centenary 1920-2020' in Bengali and in English on the back. On the back of the 100 taka note, it is also printed with the two words - Commemorative Note. These two words are excluded from the 200 taka note but instead it has the words 'Birth Centenary' printed. Both notes are also printed with the year date of 2020.

Opinion ⇨
I believe this is what happened in the 1970s. Following the coup d'etat in 1975, the alleged ringleader Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad became the President of Bangladesh. However his presidency only lasted for 83 days and was then ousted from office on 06/11/1975 by two military officers Khaled Mosharraf and Shafat Jamil. Whilst he was accused as the ringleader, he was never charged or tried and he died of natural causes in 1996 in Dhaka Bangladesh.

In 2010, five of the people involved in the assassination were hanged for their crime. Another one died of natural causes in Zimbabwe.

A former military captain, Abdul Majed who admitted his involvement in the killing, returned to Bangladesh and was arrested on 08/04/2020 by the authorities. He has been hiding in Kolkata (Calcutta) India for the last 23 years. On 12/04/2020, he was hanged for his crime at the central jail at Keraniganj near Dhaka. Following the bloody coup in 1975, Addul Majed was awarded for his effort and was posted as Bangladesh's ambassador to Senegal in 1980 by the then President Ziaur Rahman (not related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman).

According to the authorities in Bangladesh, there are still few of the plotters at large, and it is believed that one is living in Canada and another one is in the United States. After 45 years, this case is still not resolved.

Please feel free to post your comments here if you believe what I have stated above is not correct. I am only interested in what actually happened and not siding on either side of the politics.

.Bangladesh - 2, 5 & 10 Taka Dated 2018 Specimen Notes

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ
(Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh)

Bangladesh Bank
Currency : Taka (BDT)

Here are three low denominations of specimen banknotes all dated 2018. These are relatively cheap notes and I have a feeling that they were sold as souvenirs, but I can confirm that as I have nothing to back me up. There are plenty on sale at the moment and one can only guess this is the case. The word 'SPECIMEN' is only printed on the front but not on the back and all notes have the 7 zeros printed as the serial numbers. Older Specimen notes issued in Bangladesh have the word Specimen printed on both sides of the note.

I am a bit skeptical about these specimen notes. If you look at the three notes that I have posted here, the word 'SPECIMEN' is diagonally printed over the watermark area, which is expected. However, I have seen these same specimen notes with the word 'SPECIMEN' printed horizontally in the middle of the notes. The question here is why are there two versions of these specimen notes for the same series? Are these specimen notes mass produced by the central bank as numismatic items?

.Bangladesh - 70 Taka Commemorative Developing Bangladesh

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ
People's Republic of Bangladesh

A commemorative note of 70 Taka released on 22.03.2018 celebrating the Developing of Bangladesh 2041. This new commemorative was launched by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, together with the Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on 22.03.2018. The notes were also made available on  the same day to the public. This is a father and daughter note. On the front it depicts the portrait of the first and fourth President of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) and her daughter Sheikh Hasina Wazed on the back. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the founding father of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He became the first and fourth President of Bangladesh between 11.04.1971 to 15.08.1975 and the second Prime Minister between 12.01.1972 to 21.01.1975. He was assassinated on 15.08.1975 aged 55 years old. Her daughter became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh first between 1996 to 2001. In 2009, she returned to the role following a landslide victory in the general election and elected as the Prime Minister following the 2014 general election.

Reverse - On the other side of the note, the portrait of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and Padma Bridge under construction are printed.

Other main features of the design on the note are:-
Front - the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the National monument in Savar (Shabhar) and Betbunya satellite and maps of Bangladesh. The National monument was set up in the memory of the Bangladesh Liberation War of independence in 1971 and is located in Savar. The construction of this monument started in 1978 and completed in 1982.

Back - Padma Bridge (still under construction). This is a multi purpose road-rail bridge across the Padma River which connect between Louhajong, Munshiganji to Shariatpur and Madaripur, linking the southwest of Bangladesh to the northern and eastern regions. This two-level steel truss bridge comprises of a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single track railway on a lower level. On the left hand side, it also features the Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and the globe. And at the bottom of the note, it has the following texts printed both in both Bengali and English - Bangladesh will be a developed country by 2041 - Sheikh Hasina. This message was made by the Prime Minister in January 2016. On the left hand side of the note, it also printed with the words - COMMEMORATIVE NOTE.

This is an odd value note and I am not sure why the 70 Taka was selected. However this is not the first time such odd denomination was printed. In 2011 a 40 Taka commemorative was issued and then in 2012, a 60 Taka commemorative note was also released. This is the sixth commemorative banknote issued by the Bangladesh.

The notes are also issued in a folder format for 200 Taka each.

Footnote:
In my opinion, this is a very unique note in the sense that the design of this note included the portrait of a father and daughter team. I do not believe I have ever came across any such notes except those involved a royal family.
