...Tajikistan - 100 Somoni 25 Years of National Currency (2000-2025)

Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон
(Republic of Tajikistan)

Национальный банк Таджикистана
(National Bank of Tajikistan, Est.1991)
Currency - Somoni (TJS)

On 30.10.2025, the National Bank of Tajikistan released a new 100 somoni commemorative note. This note was issued to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the creation of the national currency - Somoni. The Tajikistani somoni was named after Ismail Somoni (Ismail Samani), a national hero and the father of the Tajik nation.

Tajikistan gained independence from the Soviet Union on 09.09.1991, following the dissolution of the USSR. In 1994, it released its own currency call Tajik 'Rubl' (Rouble). In 1999 it introduced the new currency called 'Somoni'. The somoni currency is subdivided into 100 dirams.

The somoni currency was first introduced on 30.10.2000, replacing the rouble at the rate of 1 somoni = 1,000 roubles.

Since gaining independence in 1991, this is the first time that the central bank has issued a commemorative note.

There are no changes to the designs or signatures except for the year date. I believe both the 20 and 50 somoni are still hybrid notes, including the 500 somoni as well. The rest are paper notes.

Collecting banknotes in full sets is always more enjoyable than just getting odd ones.

The National Bank of Tajikistan announced on 16.11.2021 the issuance of banknotes of 10, 100, 200 and 500 somoni, and these notes are all printed with the year dated of 2021. The other two notes for the 20 and 50 somoni printed with the same year date of 2021 were already issued and circulating in mid 2021. This announcement completed the full set of all notes printed with the same year date of 2021. The 5 somoni is no longer issue. The last print for this denomination was dated 2013.

The two notes of 20 and 50 somoni which were released earlier, are improved banknotes, and both are printed on hybrid material with a composition of 80% cotton paper and 20% polymer substrate. These 2021 series of notes are all reprints of the current series, first introduced in 1999. The designs are basically the same for all notes except that the back of the 100 somoni note has now changed from the Presidential Palace (2018 print and before) to the Kokhi Navrouz State Complex. The 500 somoni was added to the current series in 2010. Like the previous issues, this 500 somoni is also printed on hybrid material. The 500 somoni is still the largest denomination of banknote circulating in the country.

All notes are printed with the National flag of Tajikistan on the back of the note, in tri-colour of red, white and green. In the middle of the flag, is a crown with seven stars surmounted in an arc shape on top of the crown. The national flag of Tajikistan was adopted in November 1992 following the break away from the Soviet Union. Independence day for Tajikistan was achieved on 09.09.1991.

As expected, all the 2021 notes bear the signatures of; -

.Tajikistan - 500 Somoni 2018 Hybrid Reprint

Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон
(Republic of Tajikistan)

Бонки миллии Тоҷикистон
(National Bank of Tajikistan)
Currency : Somoni (TJS)

Here I have posted a 500 somoni Hybrid note printed and issued in 2018. This is the first reprint of the 2010 Hybrid series. The main design for this note is still the same as the 2010 dated note, with the portrait of Abuabdullo Rudaki (858-941), who was the founder of the Tajik classic literature, as the main feature on the front and on the back is the Palace of Nations in Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan. The Palace of Nations (aka White House built 2008) is the official residence of the President of Tajikistan. Despite this is a reprint of the earlier issue, there are few minor changes to the main designs

On the front;
1) The image of the National Bank of Tajikistan (Three Snow-Capped Ridges) on the far right has been replaced by the image of Abuabdullo Rudaki;
2) The 500 value in oval shape (purple colour) design on the right side of Abuabdullo Rudaki has been removed;
3) The shield like image between the Tajikistan emblem and the 500 value has changed from a plain to a yellowish design and the value 500 is printed in green;
On the back;
4) The Presidential flag and the emblem are shifted further to the left;
5) The flag on top of the Palace of Nations is now printed in colour;
6) The three flying doves are more larger or not so skinny as those printed on the 2010 print; and
7) The see-through image on the hologram has been replaced by a flying dove.

Please refer to below images for comparisons for the two notes issued.

Whilst more that 96% of the Tajikistan population are Muslim, there are no Farsi or Persian script printed on the note. This note is printed with Tajik texts on the front and English on the back.

.Tajikistan - 500 Somoni 2010 Hybrid

Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон
Republic of Tajikistan

This is Tajikistan's first Hybrid note issued in 2010.

Like many countries in central Asia, Tajikistan was once part of the Soviet Union empire. It became independent on 09.09.1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union empire. In 1994, it started issuing its own currency called Rubl. It then changed to Somoni when it issued new currency in 1999. Since 1999, the 500 somoni is still the largest note ever issued. The portrait on the front of the note belongs to Abuabdullo Rudaki (b.858-941). Abuabdullo was the founder of the Tajik classic literature. The Palace of Nations in Dushanbe is depicted on the back of the note.
