Asia here is only referred to Southern Asia and the rest of Western (Middle East) and Central Asia. I have separated SouthEast Asia and East Asia with different links here.

many of the banknotes posted here do not need descriptions. the designs are beautiful enough for me to add any more details - a picture is worth a thousand words

.Iran - 200 Rials Overprint

I regretted this after buying this note. I believe this is not an authorised overprint and I was told that such overprint is not illegal either. Luckily it was not expensive. This is one lesson learnt, not to buy them again with this type of overprints.

Two Hundred Rials, ND PNL
Overprint on P136
Is this official release or simple just another 'home made'?Reverse

  1. Hi paperbanknotes,
    Interesting banknote here.
By the way, is it common to have overprints on modern banknotes when current printing technology is so advance?
Designs can be changed without much difficulties unlike in the olden days.
Thanks alot for sharing, paperbanknotes :)

  2. Hi WhyCollect,

I can't say, but I suppose. it's cheaper to have overprint for commemorative notes than to have a new design. In the 90s, Australia released a fair bit of commemorative polymer notes all simple with overprint or special letters prefix. Even in 1926 when the Central Bank of China released 2 notes to commemorate the death of Dr Sun Yet-sen, just with overprint. Perhaps this may not be a good example (due time factor), but it is much cheaper to have an overprint for commemorative than to have a complete new design of notes. The cost of a note is costing about 5-10 cents to manufacturing. You can work out how much to produce a new design, like the fifty million pieces were issued for the RM50 Independence commemorative note.

  3. Lots of the money notes nowadays in Iran have stupid motto like this on them, it says something about Imam Hossein which is one of the Shia Islam Saints, search about Shia Imam and you will find out who he is, what that poem says is that "As long as there is a god who is ruling the world, There is a Mojatab (Another name for Hossein) who solve muslem problems (in ritual ways it solve it)" in the flag it is full name of Hossein and top of flags it sends salut to Imam Hossein, and in the last line it congratulate Mohammad Birthday.

  5. Hi Kamyar

This is useful information, as I have no idea why they have all these overprints. In some countries, such overprint can be considered as illegal unless they have the approval of the Central Bank.

Once again, thanks for the info.

    Cheers.
