many of the banknotes posted here do not need descriptions. the designs are beautiful enough for me to add any more details - a picture is worth a thousand words

  2. Wonder why some countries use such big numbers in their currency unit like the Japanese Yen, Iranian Rials, etc?

  4. Hi WhyCollect

    Honestly, I have no idea. I am sure the Japanese government can always re design it's currency by dropping few zeros, but I suppose this will come to priority of the government and their central bank. Beside, such move is always very expensive, not to mention the amount of publicity, education among the population, including the elderly population etc. Perhaps, the reason could be the cost, or why chance if not broken!

    As for Iran, my guest is that most western countries are not supporting the Rials currency, and if that is case, then very little demand for it and as such a weak currency. Or perhaps Iran has a rather weak economy. I am not sure if this theory is correct.

  5. Due to the high amount of zeros in its currency, Iranians drop 1 zero from their currency and call them Toman.
    So, 1,000 Rials will be known as 100 Tomans. This makes counting easier.
    According to my Iranian friend, it is the measurement of the old currency when they revalue it in 1932 1 toman = 10 rials.
    Many tourists will have problem when visiting Iran because they presume prices to be in Rials but instead in Tomans.

  6. Iranians call Toman as the unofficial currency measurement in Iran.

    Toman
    The real iranian made currencies are " Dinar , Tooman "

    When iran was being governmented by " Ghajar family " , the official currency was " toman " and Dinar and Rial
    from " Pahlavi government and islamic republic of iran " until now , the government made currency to " rial " but people emit ( delete ) one zero from the gurrency and say that by " tomans "
    like = 100.000 Rials => 10.000 toman(s)
    but because of the bad condition of iranian currency , people always emit three zeros from iranian currency ( 10000 rials => 1000 toomans => 1 tooman ( unofficial )
    note : Central bank of iran is going to delete three zeros from iranian currency until new years
    note 2 : you can find any of iranian governments in wikipedia

    @ wilson , are u iranian ?
